Pedro Neto scored twice as Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, ending the hosts’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season. The victory moved Chelsea into the top four and delivered their first league clean sheet since January.
After a heated, goalless first half featuring five yellow cards, Chelsea took the lead 44 seconds after the restart. Jorrel Hato reached the byline and sent in a low cross that fell to Neto, who controlled the ball before firing past Jordan Pickford.
The match was then halted for lengthy treatment after Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a free kick. Martinez was removed on a stretcher and taken to hospital. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said the goalkeeper had suffered a concussion, left the stadium conscious and was undergoing precautionary tests.
Mike Penders replaced Martinez to make his Premier League debut and helped preserve the clean sheet. Everton had created several first-half opportunities, with Martinez saving Thierno Barry’s close-range header and tipping over a Jack Grealish volley, while Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo struck the crossbar before halftime.
Neto added his second goal in stoppage time, collecting the loose ball after Jordan Henderson’s free kick hit Everton’s defensive wall and placing a low shot into the bottom corner. He dedicated the victory to Martinez after the match.
