At least 17 people were reported killed and several others injured in a stampede at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday, October 17. The injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Police closed the Chorebagan pandal to visitors, while senior Kolkata Police officials reached the scene. Several other prominent pandals, including Suruchi Sangha and Chetla Agrani, were also shut as a precaution, and Tala Prattoy said it would remain closed until further notice.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said preliminary information indicated that the stampede began after an announcement by a private security agency and the blowing of whistles. He said a full investigation would be conducted and that members of the puja committee and personnel from the security agency had been detained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each person killed and ₹50,000 for each injured person. President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered condolences. Shah said he had spoken with Adhikari and would postpone his scheduled West Bengal programmes to visit the injured in hospital.
