Israeli settlers attacked Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine on Friday as she covered violence against Palestinian olive farmers near the villages of Abu Falah and Turmus Ayya in the occupied West Bank.
Levine said more than 50 masked settlers carrying sticks assaulted and repeatedly kicked her. She was hospitalized in Ramallah with injuries to her leg and hand; The Times of Israel reported that she underwent surgery and suffered broken vertebrae. The Washington Post said Levine had been wearing a flak jacket visibly marked “Press.” The Foreign Press Association said her passport, phone, wallet and equipment were stolen.
Israeli police opened an investigation. The Israeli military said troops and border police deployed after a report of a violent confrontation and that the circumstances of Levine’s injury would be examined.
The US State Department condemned “criminal violence by any party” in the West Bank, supported an investigation and legal accountability, and offered consular assistance. US lawmakers Rosa DeLauro, Chris Van Hollen and Ro Khanna separately called for action against those responsible.
On Saturday, masked settlers attacked European diplomats and Catholic representatives visiting Taybeh, according to Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. He said a French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged, while the diplomatic team was safe. Israeli police opened an investigation, and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the violence. The Israeli military called it a severe act of violence but said the visit had not been coordinated with the military and no soldiers were present.
