Pope Leo XIV was expected to be discharged from a Rome hospital on Saturday, four days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer, according to the Vatican.

The 71-year-old pontiff had the lower lobe of his right lung removed on Oct. 13 at Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic after being diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, The Indian Express reported. Scroll.in described the cancer as having been found at an early stage and said Leo is not known to have smoked.

Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common form of non-small cell lung cancer and can occur in people who have never smoked. Dr. Ankit Jain, a medical oncologist quoted by The Indian Express, said genetic changes in tumor cells, including EGFR and ALK mutations, can drive uncontrolled cell growth without tobacco exposure. Other associated risks include secondhand smoke, radon, air pollution and some workplace exposures, though no single cause is identified in some patients.

Treatment after surgery depends on the cancer’s stage, the patient’s overall condition and molecular tests that can identify mutations susceptible to targeted medicines. The Vatican’s account of Leo’s condition has also prompted renewed questions about how openly it communicates information about a pope’s health.
