Trump Cancels Livestream of Nidal Hasan’s Military Execution

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the planned execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting, will not be livestreamed. Hasan’s execution by firing squad remains scheduled for Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, Texas.

Trump wrote that broadcasting the execution could have served as a deterrent but said “many very good and well-meaning people would rather not watch him die.” Immediate family members of Hasan’s victims may still attend in person, he said.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the livestream plan last week, saying the public should be able to watch and arguing that people needed to understand the consequences of such attacks. A Pentagon spokesman said Hegseth had spoken with Trump before Thursday’s announcement and supported the president’s decision.

The proposal drew criticism from human rights groups, the United Nations and religious leaders. Vice President JD Vance had also expressed reservations and said he would not watch. Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees the Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, questioned the morality of turning the execution into a public spectacle and warned of possible harm to participating service members.

Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 at Fort Hood in 2009. A military court sentenced him to death in 2013. His execution would be the first carried out by the U.S. military in more than 60 years.
