A Mexican judge sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for murdering two Australian brothers and their American friend during a 2024 surfing trip in Baja California.
Jesus Gerardo Garcia, known as “El Kekas,” Irineo Francisco and Angel Jesus were sentenced Friday in Ensenada, one week after being convicted. The offenses included homicide, robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence. Judge Raul Hernandez found that the defendants had acted with premeditation.
Australians Callum Robinson, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, and their American friend Carter Rhoad, 30, were camping near Punta San Jose, south of Ensenada, when they were attacked in late April 2024. Prosecutors said the attackers intended to steal tires and other parts from the group’s pickup truck. The three travelers were shot, and their bodies were dumped in a well more than 15 metres deep. They were discovered on May 3 after a search assisted by the FBI.
Rhoad’s mother, Page Rhoad, said after the sentencing that there could never be justice for the loss of a son, but expressed relief that the men would not hurt anyone else. The Robinson brothers’ parents had traveled from Australia for the month-long trial.
Garcia’s former partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, was sentenced separately to 20 years in prison in November after admitting involvement in the robbery and vehicle theft.
