Israeli settlers attacked a convoy carrying European diplomats in the occupied West Bank on Saturday and assaulted a visiting French mayor who had joined Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest, according to witnesses and diplomats.
Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in northern France, said masked settlers kicked him and struck him with iron bars near Taybeh, where he was participating in the harvest as a symbolic gesture. He was seen collapsed beside a vehicle after the assault but did not require hospital treatment. A local priest said another person suffered a head wound that required stitches.
The delegation included the senior French and Belgian representatives in Jerusalem and Polish diplomats. Belgium called for an end to “impunity for violent settlers,” while the European Union condemned the violence. France urged Israel to stop what it described as acts of terrorism by settlers.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, and police said they would investigate. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office urged caution before conclusions were drawn, said the diplomats should have coordinated with the Israeli military, and alleged that settlers were being targeted by a smear campaign.
The incident occurred a day after settlers beat a Washington Post photographer, leaving him with broken vertebrae and in moderate condition.
