A truck drove through a youth soccer game at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 11 other people, authorities said.
Wichita police said 10 people, including five children, were hospitalized with traumatic injuries ranging from minor to severe, though none appeared life-threatening. A 61-year-old woman was also hospitalized for a non-traumatic medical issue. The two people killed, both from McPherson, Kansas, were pronounced dead at the scene and were not related.
Emergency calls began at about 3:25 p.m., and responders found the truck on a field at the west end of the complex. Police identified the driver as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. She was taken into custody and was cooperating with investigators. Two juveniles were passengers in the truck.
Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators know what occurred but are still trying to determine why. Authorities had not released the names of the driver or victims.
The driver had a child participating in soccer at the complex, though not on the field where the incident occurred, police said. All events at the complex were canceled until further notice.
