Netflix has appointed former Disney executive Peter Rice as chief content officer, replacing Bela Bajaria after nearly a decade at the streaming company. Rice will take over Oct. 26 and oversee Netflix’s global content organization, including scripted and unscripted series, films and live events.
Rice previously served as chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment at The Walt Disney Company. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions at 21st Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures. At Disney, his responsibilities included cable channels, news programming and coverage of major sporting events.
“Peter is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement, praising Rice’s experience working with creative talent.
Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and became chief content officer in January 2023. During her tenure, the company released global hits including “Bridgerton” and “Squid Game,” expanded its unscripted programming and moved further into live events through partnerships with WWE and the NFL.
The leadership change was announced one day after Netflix cut approximately 6% of its workforce, or about 1,000 jobs. CNBC reported that Netflix shares were down more than 20% for the year, while The Irish Times, citing Bloomberg, said the company has more than 325 million subscribers globally.
