Food and energy costs pushed inflation higher across several economies in September and October, according to official data reported by news outlets in the United States and Asia.

U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year through September, up from 3.4% in August and slightly above economists’ forecasts. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said gasoline prices increased 9.1% during September and accounted for more than half of the monthly rise. Energy prices were 20.4% higher than a year earlier, while gasoline was up 34.2%. Food prices were unchanged during the month and 2.5% higher annually. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, rose to 2.6% from 2.4%.

In India, wholesale inflation reached 11.4% in September, the highest reading in the WPI series beginning in April 2024. Food-article inflation accelerated to 8.1% from 5.7% in August, manufactured-goods inflation reached 9.8%, and fuel-and-power inflation stood at 25.85%.

Pakistan’s weekly Sensitive Price Index was 11.38% higher year-on-year in the week ending October 15, although it slipped 0.04% from the previous week. Wheat flour, chicken and several pulses recorded weekly increases.

Nepal’s food-and-beverage inflation reached 6.77% year-on-year in mid-August, with sharp increases in oils, fruit, meat and vegetables. In the Philippines’ Cordillera region, inflation rose to 8.2% in September from 6.8%, with food and fuel among the reported drivers.
