Hurricane Trudy strengthened as it approached Mexico’s Pacific coast on Saturday, with Reuters reporting that it had become a major hurricane. Forecasters warned of heavy rain, destructive waves, flooding and landslides in western Mexico.
Earlier Saturday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center placed Trudy about 305 kilometers (190 miles) south-southeast of Manzanillo, with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h (90 mph). It was moving at about 13 km/h (8 mph) and was forecast to approach southwestern and west-central Mexico later Saturday before passing near the coast overnight into Sunday.
A hurricane warning covered the coastline from Manzanillo in Colima state to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. Hurricane conditions were expected in the warning area Saturday night, while tropical storm conditions were forecast to spread across the region during the day.
The storm was expected to bring 10 to 20 centimeters (four to eight inches) of rain to parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco through the weekend, with isolated totals near 38 centimeters (15 inches). The hurricane center warned that the rainfall could cause life-threatening flooding and landslides, particularly in steep terrain. Storm surge, coastal flooding, dangerous surf and rip currents were also possible.
Mexico’s navy urged coastal residents and maritime operators to exercise extreme caution. Colima authorities said saturated ground from successive storms could worsen the effects of Trudy’s rainfall.
