Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf, sidelining him for at least four games.
The Eagles said Hurts injured the calf when he was stepped on during an Oct. 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He reported soreness to the team’s medical staff after practice on Oct. 8, then returned to practice the next day before the team traveled to London to play the Jacksonville Jaguars.
An ultrasound performed in London revealed a superficial blood clot. After reviewing the results, doctors determined that activity and mobility were important and that Hurts could safely play against Jacksonville. He completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
A follow-up ultrasound after the team returned to Philadelphia showed that the clot had moved, according to The Japan Times. The Eagles ruled Hurts out of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers and consulted multiple doctors before placing him on injured reserve. He will undergo treatment.
Backup Tanner McKee is expected to start against Carolina. Hurts must also miss games against the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders and New York Giants before becoming eligible to return.
