Ukraine says Starshield disruption hindered drone defenses as Musk points to US controls

Ukraine’s military satellite connectivity has been restored after a disruption that officials said hindered battlefield operations and efforts to intercept Russian drones, according to a Ukrainian Defence Ministry source cited by Reuters. Kyiv is seeking an explanation from SpaceX for the disruption, which occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ukrainian officials said terminals were restricted on platforms moving faster than 100 miles per hour (160km/h), without advance warning. Defence adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov said the change caused some missions to fail and affected reconnaissance, frontline logistics and signal relay. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said connectivity failures disrupted drones used to intercept Russian attacks and contributed to Ukraine’s inability to stop some incoming drones.

Starshield is SpaceX’s military-focused satellite service, developed from its commercial Starlink network and provided to the US government for national-security operations. Elon Musk said SpaceX did not decide on the limits, writing that Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government and that restrictions on speed or use are determined by the US military and ultimately President Donald Trump. The White House and Pentagon did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Former Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov said connectivity below the 100mph threshold was being restored but called for the speed restriction to be removed entirely. Republican Senator Thom Tillis said senators would ask the Pentagon’s inspector general to investigate the loss of access and its effect on Ukraine’s defenses.
