About 1,800 people were arrested across France after nationwide demonstrations over living costs and public services were accompanied by riots, arson and widespread looting on Saturday, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said Sunday.
The Interior Ministry estimated that 550,000 people participated, including 110,000 in Paris, while the CGT trade union put national turnout at 800,000. The demonstrations brought together students protesting staff shortages and deteriorating school facilities, union members, farmers, firefighters and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement.
The main Paris march was largely peaceful during the afternoon, but later groups set fire to vehicles and buildings, looted shops and clashed with riot police. Officers used tear gas, water cannon and batons. Violence and property damage were also reported in Marseille, Lyon, Lille and several other cities.
A fire severely damaged Limoges’ historic town hall and caused part of the building to collapse. Lyon’s tourist office was set ablaze, while protesters broke into Marseille city hall. The Retail and Trade Federation said about 1,500 shops and retailers were damaged.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 150 police officers were injured. The Interior Ministry later said more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were hurt. President Emmanuel Macron condemned attacks on public buildings, businesses and town halls and said those responsible would be prosecuted.
Paris police recorded 855 arrests. Prosecutors said 517 people remained in custody there on Sunday, including 171 minors.
