A fast-moving wildfire in southern Orange County damaged or destroyed at least six homes and injured two firefighters as strong Santa Ana winds drove flames through San Clemente and into San Juan Capistrano.
The Norte fire had burned 570 acres and was 5% contained as of Saturday morning, The Guardian reported, citing the Orange County Fire Authority. Crews attacked the fire overnight from the ground and air while strengthening containment lines. Two firefighters were hospitalized with heat-related injuries, but officials reported no civilian injuries or deaths. The fire’s cause remained under investigation.
About 6,000 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders by Friday night, affecting approximately 16,000 residents. Evacuation shelters opened in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Parents were also asked to collect students from schools in both cities, according to the Orange County Register.
Orange County Fire Authority Chief TJ McGovern said weather and topography caused the fire to spread rapidly, describing it as a wind-driven event. Gusts reached 50 to 70 mph, and the National Weather Service warned that Santa Ana winds and the risk of extreme fire behavior could persist through Saturday. A red flag warning remained in effect for parts of Southern California through Saturday night.
