Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for an emergency session of parliament to authorize defensive assistance to Saudi Arabia if Riyadh requests it, as the kingdom faces continuing attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis.
Speaking Saturday at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy, Sisi said Egypt was prepared to take “any measure” needed to protect Saudi Arabia under the direction of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He stressed that the proposed authorization was intended for defense, not to initiate an attack.
The request follows Houthi strikes on Saudi airports and oil facilities. An attack earlier this month on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 14 people and wounded more than 300, according to Al Jazeera. Other airports, including those in Dammam, Abha, Jazan and Najran, have also reportedly been targeted.
The Saudi-backed Yemeni government launched a military campaign this month to retake territory from the Houthis. Egypt has also supported Saudi calls for secure navigation in the Red Sea, where Houthi control of Yemen’s coast has raised concerns about traffic through the Bab al-Mandeb strait and toward the Suez Canal.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi discussed Yemen and regional developments by phone, according to a statement published through Araghchi’s Telegram channel. The ministers discussed ways to promote regional peace and stability.
