A U.S. Air Force service member died after falling during a rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday, before the University of Texas at San Antonio football game against Navy.
The demonstration was part of a pregame ceremony for UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. Four service members had been scheduled to rappel to the field from the stadium rafters. The airman fell to the turf while descending and received medical treatment on the field before being taken by stretcher to a local hospital, where he later died.
Nellis Air Force Base said the service member was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. His identity was not immediately released. The incident remains under investigation.
Kickoff was delayed by about 10 minutes, but the game proceeded, with UTSA defeating Navy 38-34. UTSA said it was activating well-being services for faculty, staff and students who may have been affected by the incident.
“Our hearts are heavy following the tragic incident at the Alamodome,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said Sunday, extending condolences to the service member’s family, fellow airmen and squadron.
