Saudi-Houthi fighting escalates after deadly Riyadh airport attacks

Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis exchanged further attacks this week after two deadly strikes on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

A missile hit the airport on Saturday, killing 13 people in what the Taipei Times described as the deadliest attack on Saudi soil in more than a decade. Those killed included an Indian national and an Egyptian flight attendant. A second strike on Sunday killed a Pakistani resident and wounded 11 people, according to Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority. The airport’s closure was subsequently extended, while airlines cancelled flights.

The Saudi-led coalition struck the Yemen Petroleum Company’s al-Sabaha fuel facility near the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa, on Tuesday night. The Houthis said their attacks on Saudi airports, energy facilities and military bases were retaliation for Saudi strikes on areas they control.

Saudi officials said missiles and drones targeting Riyadh, Dammam and other cities were intercepted after the fuel-depot strike. Shrapnel fell in a residential area of Dhahran, and an Aramco administrative building sustained a limited fire, with no casualties reported.

On Wednesday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had accurately struck Riyadh’s airport with a ballistic missile. The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted a missile fired toward the capital.

France advised its citizens on Tuesday to avoid airports in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Saudi Arabia’s cabinet said the Houthis would “bear the consequences” of the attacks.
