President Donald Trump said Thursday that the scheduled execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will not be livestreamed, reversing a plan announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said immediate family members of the victims may view the execution in person if they choose.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted by a military jury in 2013 of 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder. He killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 in the Nov. 5, 2009, attack. His execution is scheduled for Dec. 3.
Hegseth announced last week that the execution would be public, saying people should understand there are serious consequences for such acts. Trump initially said he supported the proposal.
The plan drew criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, religious leaders, retired military officers, rights groups and international officials. House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that footage could become a recruiting tool for terrorists, while Vice President JD Vance said he would not watch a livestream. An ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos poll released Thursday found that 80% of respondents opposed broadcasting the execution and 18% supported it.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Trump and Hegseth discussed the reversal before it was announced and that the defense secretary supports the president’s decision.
