Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Europe and the United States to maintain pressure on Russia after U.S. President Donald Trump paused new sanctions and eased restrictions linked to Russian diesel.
At an EU summit in Brussels on Friday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine wanted to end the war quickly but saw no indication that Russia was prepared to do so. He asked EU leaders for an additional €70 billion ($79 billion) next year for defense, weapons and resilience as Ukraine prepares for further attacks during the winter.
European Council President Antonio Costa said it was not the time to withdraw support from Ukraine or ease sanctions on Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU would not lift sanctions unless Russia ended the war.
Trump signed an executive order Friday waiving sanctions that had been due to take effect under legislation targeting Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions and oil-tanker fleet. Zelenskyy called the move a “reward” for Russian President Vladimir Putin and said easing pressure would encourage further attacks. Russia welcomed the suspension.
Zelenskyy nevertheless said Saturday that Ukraine remained ready for U.S.-led negotiations “anywhere” and in “any format.” He said Washington had indicated a meeting with Ukrainian officials could occur the following week and was working toward possible trilateral talks involving Putin, although neither Russia nor the United States had confirmed such a meeting.
His comments came amid continued Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power system and Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy facilities.
