Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez said he expects to return “in a few weeks” after undergoing surgery following a collision during his team’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Everton.
Martinez clashed with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a second-half free kick at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday. Play was stopped for more than 10 minutes as paramedics treated Martinez before carrying him off on a stretcher. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said after the match that the goalkeeper had suffered a concussion, left the stadium conscious and was taken to hospital for precautionary tests.
In a social media post from hospital on Sunday, Martinez said the operation had gone well and thanked people for their messages. He added that the victory and clean sheet were most important and that he would be back within weeks. The Punch reported that the surgery treated a fractured jaw, while other reports described a jaw injury without confirming the precise diagnosis.
Pedro Neto scored both Chelsea goals, opening the scoring less than a minute after halftime and adding another in the 90th minute. The result ended Everton’s unbeaten start to the league season and gave Chelsea their first league clean sheet since January.
Mike Penders replaced Martinez and completed his Premier League debut as Chelsea preserved the shutout.
