Israeli settlers carried out attacks in several occupied West Bank communities on Saturday, injuring Palestinians, a Washington Post photojournalist and a visiting French mayor, according to witnesses and officials.
In Abu Falah, dozens of masked settlers attacked Palestinians harvesting olives, burned olive trees and threw rocks. Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine said attackers pushed her to the ground and repeatedly kicked her before Palestinian colleagues helped her escape. Palestinian medics said Levine was among at least two people taken to hospitals near Ramallah. Israeli forces later arrived and used tear gas; the military said troops and border police had responded to a violent confrontation and fired warning shots.
Near Taybeh, a predominantly Christian Palestinian village, settlers confronted a delegation that included French, Belgian and Polish diplomats, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said. Witnesses said masked men surrounded a diplomatic vehicle, demanded identification and smashed a window.
Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in France, told AFP that settlers threw him down, kicked him and struck him with iron bars. He reported minor injuries and continued his visit, which was intended to formalize a cooperation agreement with Taybeh.
Belgium condemned the incident, and Israeli police opened an investigation. The Israeli military said the delegation’s visit had not been coordinated and no soldiers were present. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office cautioned against what it called a campaign to smear settlers before the facts were established.
