A Saudi AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in the southern Najran region on Sunday, killing both crew members, according to Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki.
The coalition attributed the crash to a technical malfunction and said it occurred in an area under the jurisdiction of Saudi Arabia’s National Guard Ministry. The Gulf Cooperation Council’s secretary-general offered condolences to Saudi Arabia over the deaths of the two officers.
Yemen’s Houthi movement later released footage that it said showed a Saudi AH-6i being struck by a missile while conducting operations near Najran. The footage did not clearly show the reported incident, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the claim. Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on the footage.
A day earlier, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had downed a Saudi Apache helicopter near Najran. It was unclear whether that claim referred to the same crash. Al-Maliki responded to Saree’s statement by posting a photograph of several Apache helicopters and disputing the account.
