Sailors missing after drone attacks set tankers ablaze off Romania

Romanian authorities launched a search-and-rescue operation after drone attacks set two tankers ablaze near the country’s Black Sea coast.

Accounts differed on the number missing from the San Marino-flagged Wine Trader. The BBC reported that eight of its 12 crew members were missing, while Reuters and several other outlets put the number at seven. The tanker, travelling from Tunisia to Romania, reported explosions and a fire Thursday morning near the mouth of the Danube. Two helicopters and two rescue boats were deployed amid high waves. All crew aboard the second tanker, the Yara J, were reported safe.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that drones struck the ships but did not publicly assign responsibility. A NATO military source told Reuters that the drones were of Russian origin. Moscow said it had hit two cargo ships carrying military cargo toward Ukraine’s Odesa port but did not identify them.

Dan met Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, after which the leaders said Black Sea defences would be strengthened. NATO was expected to discuss the incidents at a North Atlantic Council meeting.

On Saturday, Romania’s Defence Ministry said two F-16s shot down two Geran-family attack drones shortly after they entered Romanian airspace near Sulina. The interception followed several recent attacks on commercial vessels near Romania and Bulgaria.
