A 16-year-old former student killed three children and a teacher and wounded two others Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, before a teacher and an armed parent intervened, authorities said.
Police identified the gunman as Griffin J. John II. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said John climbed over a school fence with a shotgun, fired at a passing pickup truck and then shot through glass doors to enter the building. He went into a special-needs classroom and opened fire, firing as many as 15 rounds, police said.
The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. The youngest was identified as Rhoam Summer, while the other two families requested privacy. Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, was also killed. Seven-year-old Saylor Graham remained hospitalized Saturday in serious but stable condition, while teacher Becky Drury, 54, was recovering from wounds to her arm and hand that were described as serious but not life-threatening.
Krantz said another teacher confronted John, throwing her phone at him and grappling with him for the shotgun. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, whose two daughters attend the school, retrieved a legally owned pistol from his vehicle after witnessing the attack and entered the building. He saw the struggle and fatally shot John, police said. Krantz credited both adults with preventing further bloodshed.
Police have not identified a motive. NBC News reported, citing two senior law enforcement officials, that John’s mother bought the shotgun around his birthday in August.
