US President Donald Trump on Sunday blamed immigration for unrest during protests in France and urged French authorities to close the country’s borders and “take control.”
“France is burning!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, saying immigration had “shattered a once great country.” France24 also reported that Trump called for tighter migration rules in response to the unrest.
The protests began last month at high schools in working-class northern suburbs of Paris, according to The Express Tribune. Anger over teacher shortages and poor facilities subsequently developed into a broader movement focused on inequality, public spending and living standards.
US Vice President JD Vance likewise attributed violence during the protests to immigration and problems with assimilation. Sharing footage that he said showed Limoges city hall on fire, Vance accused Western liberals of ignoring concerns about “assimilation and compatibility.” He also linked the unrest to the United States’ November 3 congressional elections, claiming Democrats sought a similar future for the country.
