President Donald Trump called for New Mexico to “immediately” change its name to “New America,” renewing a proposal he has promoted repeatedly since early September.
“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America,” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social, according to The Hill. He linked the proposal to his efforts to apply “America” to the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
Trump previously posted an AI-generated video showing him covering the word “Mexico” with “America” on a “Welcome to New Mexico” sign, Mother Jones reported. In that September post, he described the proposed name as “much more prestigious and beautiful for the people” of the state. The outlet said Trump subsequently promoted the idea through several additional posts and referred to it during a Republican midterm convention.
The latest demand drew opposition from at least one New Mexico Republican, according to Newsweek. Trump also argued that the proposed rebranding would accompany higher home values and incomes, Fox News reported.
