Israeli police have detained 10 settlers suspected of involvement in attacks on a U.S. photojournalist, European diplomats and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to reports by The New York Times and Middle East Eye. Middle East Eye, citing Haaretz, said the suspects were taken for questioning Monday in a joint operation involving police, the military and the Shin Bet security agency.
The detentions followed two attacks during the Palestinian olive harvest. On Friday, masked settlers assaulted Palestinians near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, and attacked Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine. The Post reported that Levine suffered broken vertebrae and was hospitalized in moderate condition.
A day later, settlers attacked a European diplomatic convoy and Palestinians harvesting olives near Taybeh. Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in France, said assailants kicked him and struck him with iron bars. He did not require hospital treatment. Senior French and Belgian representatives in Jerusalem and Polish diplomats were accompanying the visit.
The European Union condemned the violence and called for accountability and measures to prevent further attacks. France urged Israel to end what it called “acts of terrorism” by settlers, while Belgium called for an end to impunity for violent settlers.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on the diplomats, and police said they would investigate. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office urged caution before drawing conclusions and said the diplomats should have coordinated their movements with the Israeli military.
