France may impose additional localized curfews after restrictions in Paris and other cities helped prevent major overnight unrest, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said Tuesday.
“Targeted curfews have contributed to calm overnight,” Lecornu wrote on X, adding that prefects would decide on further measures in coordination with mayors. Police reported no major incidents during the night.
The restrictions followed nationwide demonstrations over living costs and conditions in schools that escalated into rioting and looting over the weekend. At least 2,400 people were arrested, while preliminary estimates indicated that about 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted.
In Paris, authorities barred people from Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district between 11 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday. Gatherings and demonstrations in designated areas were prohibited from 8 p.m. Curfews affecting minors were also introduced in Nice and several northern cities, including Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain. Marseille banned gatherings and demonstrations, while restrictions in Bordeaux and Nice were expected to continue for several days.
Lecornu has rejected a blanket curfew for entire cities but has not ruled out declaring a state of emergency. French unions have called for another round of strikes and rallies on November 5.
The government also announced assistance for affected businesses. Economy Minister Roland Lescure said no-interest loans of up to €50,000 would be offered, while furlough measures were due to begin Tuesday.
