Google restored full service to its London cloud region on Tuesday after a “power event” disrupted multiple services and affected banks, businesses and public-sector systems across the UK.
The company said it had experienced an issue in its europe-west2 region, which primarily serves customers in the UK and Ireland. Problems began at about 7 a.m. BST and peaked around 9 a.m., according to reports cited by The Guardian. Google later said its engineering team had resolved the disruption.
Digital bank Revolut reported that multiple services were unavailable or only partly available, including card payments and ATM withdrawals. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that Revolut’s outage was linked to the Google Cloud disruption. Revolut said customers’ money and data remained safe.
Halifax said some customers had difficulty using its app and website, while Lloyds said its app was operating normally but acknowledged problems with some online services. ING Germany also reported login issues. Budgeting app Emma attributed its outage to Google Cloud and said it was a technical problem rather than a security incident.
HM Courts and Tribunals Service reported disruption to its remote-hearing platform, while users also reported temporary problems involving the NHS app, Royal Mail, DPD and other services. Downdetector recorded reports affecting several organizations, although not every disruption was confirmed as connected to Google Cloud.
