A drone strike on a market in the disputed Abyei region on Monday killed scores of people, local authorities said, amid a broader escalation of drone attacks across Sudan.
Abyei officials accused Sudan’s military of striking Amiet market with 22 munitions. They initially reported 53 deaths and at least 27 injuries, including women, children, elderly people, merchants, South Sudanese returnees and Sudanese refugees. France 24 later cited local officials who put the death toll at 153, while Reuters reported that South Sudan said scores were killed. The differing tolls could not immediately be reconciled.
South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry summoned Sudan’s ambassador and condemned the attack. Abyei, which is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, includes areas controlled by factions of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. Sudan’s military had not publicly responded to the accusation.
The strike followed a Sunday attack at a transport hub near a market in Al-Dibab, an RSF-controlled town in West Kordofan. Residents and medical workers said 80 people were killed, while some local groups reported a toll as high as 150. The RSF-aligned Tasis administration accused the army.
Other recent attacks blamed on the army or the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces targeted Khartoum, Nyala, Blue Nile province and dams in eastern Sudan. The United Nations condemned drone strikes killing civilians and disrupting essential services. Sudan’s army and the RSF have been at war since April 2023.
