The UN World Food Programme is cutting monthly assistance to 500,000 Palestinians in Gaza because of a funding shortage, reducing the number of recipients from 1.6 million to 1.1 million. AP reported that aid to 200,000 people in the West Bank is also being cut.
The reductions affect both the number of recipients and the assistance provided. Families receiving food will get one parcel instead of two and a smaller bag of wheat flour. Cash payments to 75,000 families will fall from 1,250 shekels to 750 shekels per month, while daily hot meals will decline from 250,000 to 150,000.
WFP country director Shaun Hughes said the reductions were caused by insufficient funding rather than limits on humanitarian access. The agency says about 1.4 million people in Gaza, or two-thirds of the population, remain acutely food insecure, including roughly 200,000 facing emergency conditions.
The WFP said it received about half its usual funding for Palestinian operations in 2026. It estimates that it needs approximately $450 million over the next six months to sustain operations in Gaza and the West Bank, although The National reported the requirement as $400 million.
Displaced Palestinians told news outlets that losing assistance would leave families struggling to obtain food amid unemployment, destroyed livelihoods and high prices. WFP acting executive director Carl Skau urged donors to maintain support, saying needs had not declined and the agency remained able to bring in food.
