Actor Selma Blair has pleaded not guilty to two state assault charges following an alleged altercation aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to New York and incidents after the plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Airport officials responded Sunday to a report of a physically abusive passenger. Authorities allege that Blair assaulted two flight attendants during the flight, leaving them injured, and later assaulted a police officer and a nurse while being taken to a hospital. One flight attendant was hospitalized, according to the Port Authority.
Blair, 54, was charged in New York state court with two counts of second-degree assault involving the officer and nurse. She was released on bail after entering her pleas. The FBI also issued her a federal summons over the alleged assaults aboard the aircraft.
In a statement, Blair’s representatives said she “experienced a medical emergency on the flight” and “did not intend to harm anyone.” They said she has multiple sclerosis and pseudobulbar affect, a neurological condition that can cause involuntary emotional episodes. The statement also denied reports that Blair tried to open an aircraft door.
Delta said it has zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behavior. Blair’s next state court hearing is scheduled for January 19.
