Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season after doctors found multiple blood clots in his lungs, ESPN reported Monday, citing NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles said in a joint statement that he has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, indicating that a clot traveled from his leg to his lungs. He is clinically stable, has no significant functional limitations and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the statement.
Hurts will receive blood-thinning medication and cannot participate in football activities while undergoing treatment. ESPN reported that treatment is expected to sideline him for at least three months. The statement said Hurts would remain around the team and continue conditioning, and that he could resume contact football after he stops taking blood thinners.
The quarterback was initially diagnosed with a superficial clot in his calf after being cleated during an Oct. 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. An ultrasound detected the clot in London before the Eagles’ game against Jacksonville, which doctors allowed him to play. A later scan showed movement in the clot, and Philadelphia placed him on injured reserve Saturday.
Backup Tanner McKee started Sunday’s 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers, completing 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown.
