The UK will deploy RAF Typhoon fighter jets to help defend Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, the British government said Tuesday. The aircraft will conduct defensive missions and will not carry out strikes against the Houthis. Britain will also send an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisers, adding to defensive assistance announced in September.
Egypt has separately pledged “all necessary and possible support” for Saudi Arabia’s security and stability. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Cairo was prepared to act if requested by Saudi leaders, while stressing that any Egyptian role would be defensive rather than an attack on another party. Egypt’s National Defence Council also said Cairo would intensify diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, and Sisi requested parliamentary authorization to respond to a Saudi request for assistance.
The commitments follow intensified Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets, including Riyadh’s international airport, Saudi Aramco facilities and transport infrastructure. An airport strike on October 10 killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300, according to reports. Saudi authorities have also reported intercepting drones over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and southern areas, while residents have received alerts warning of aerial threats.
Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of encouraging the escalation, which Tehran denies. Iran has offered to mediate, but Yemen’s internationally recognized government rejected the proposal, describing Tehran as a party to the conflict.
