Nineteen people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pavilion in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, according to later reports from Scroll.in and The Hindu. An earlier state government update put the death toll at 17.
The crush occurred at about 7:40 p.m. as rain prompted people waiting outside to seek shelter inside the pavilion. The Indian Express, cited by Scroll.in, reported that an announcement warning the structure might collapse unless the crowd was controlled added to the confusion and triggered a sudden rush. The injured were taken to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital and other facilities.
Authorities closed the pavilion and began examining surveillance footage. Police initially detained 12 organizers, security personnel and volunteers for questioning. By Tuesday, seven people had been arrested and booked under several provisions, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, The Hindu reported. The West Bengal government said a sitting Calcutta High Court judge would investigate the incident.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited several victims’ families on Tuesday and provided ₹25 lakh to each bereaved family, while promising a government job to one relative from every family. The state also announced ₹5 lakh for each injured person and said it would cover their medical costs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced separate payments of ₹2 lakh to families of those killed and ₹50,000 to those injured.
