A parent and a teacher confronted a 16-year-old gunman during last week’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where three children and a teacher were killed and two others were wounded.
Police said Griffin J. John II first fired at a passing pickup truck, then entered the school by shooting through glass panes in locked doors. He went into a classroom containing four adults and five children, killing three students, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were wounded.
Before the gunman was killed, a teacher threw a cellphone at him, tackled him and attempted to wrest away his shotgun, according to The Guardian. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters attend the school, heard the gunfire while returning from lunch. Police said he retrieved a legally registered .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle, entered the campus and fatally shot the attacker at close range.
CBS News reported that the 12-gauge shotgun used in the attack was legally purchased in August by the gunman’s mother, Shauntai Nickerson, and given to him as a birthday gift for recreational use. The parents of 5-year-old victim Rhoam Summer have hired attorneys to investigate how the teenager obtained the weapon and whether the school had adequate active-shooter protocols.
Police have not announced a motive. Investigators are examining the gunman’s devices and online activity.
