The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the defending NBA champion New York Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, giving LeBron James and Jaylen Brown victories in their debuts with Philadelphia.
Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 28 points, while Brown contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. James, beginning a record-extending 24th NBA season at age 41, finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Joel Embiid added 13 points and 11 rebounds as Philadelphia’s defense held off repeated New York rallies after the 76ers regained the lead in the third quarter.
Jalen Brunson paced the Knicks with 21 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds. The loss followed a pregame ceremony in which New York raised its championship banner and presented rings after ending a 53-year title drought last season.
James said the revamped 76ers still need time to develop after he had spent just over two weeks with the team, but praised their opening performance, particularly on defense. He also acknowledged the importance of the Knicks’ celebration for their fans, comparing it with Cleveland ending its own long championship drought during his career.
