Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case in the expanding Bundibugyo virus outbreak, while Kenya has reported a ninth infection, according to France 24. Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention chief Jean Kaseya called the outbreak an “extremely serious threat” and appealed for international funding, medical supplies and health workers.
Kenya’s outbreak began with an imported case confirmed in early October. The patient, a 40-year-old Kenyan who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo, travelled by road through Uganda and then flew from Entebbe to Nairobi. He died after being admitted to hospital and testing positive for the Bundibugyo strain. A relative who had been quarantined was subsequently confirmed infected, and the number of Kenyan cases has since risen.
Kenya declared Ebola a formidable epidemic disease and introduced regulations covering entry screening, isolation, quarantine, contact tracing, laboratory reporting, decontamination and safe burials. By October 12, the World Health Organization said authorities had listed 127 contacts, placed 94 in quarantine and screened more than 665,000 travellers at entry points.
The outbreak originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has also affected Uganda. Reported totals in Congo have risen above 9,000 cases and 4,400 deaths. No approved vaccine or specific treatment is currently available for the Bundibugyo strain, making early detection, isolation, supportive care and contact tracing central to containment.
