Cockroach Janta Party activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released in Delhi on Wednesday after seven days in judicial custody, following an order by a Special Executive Magistrate court accepting their sureties and written undertaking.
The two promised to maintain peace and not call for protests at Jantar Mantar while it remains denotified as a protest site. The Indian Express reported that each was required to furnish personal and surety bonds of ₹50,000. The court ordered their release despite a Delhi Police request to extend their custody by another three days, according to The Hindu and Scroll.in.
Police detained Das and Ranka on October 13 after they entered the barricaded Jantar Mantar area and waved the national flag. They were sent to judicial custody for five days on October 14, and their detention was extended by two days on October 19. In extending custody, the magistrate had said their conduct showed disregard for the law and could threaten peace and tranquillity.
Earlier Wednesday, Das and Ranka withdrew a Delhi High Court petition challenging the extension of their custody. The High Court did not rule on the merits and noted that they had an alternative remedy before the lower court. The next hearing before the magistrate is scheduled for October 23.
