Elon Musk said Monday that he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, a pledge valued at more than $10 billion at the company’s current share price.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote on X, adding, “This will be the first of many.” He did not explain who would qualify, when the shares would be distributed or how the transfer would work.
The United States has roughly 72 million to 73 million children under 18, according to federal data cited by several outlets. At SpaceX’s Friday closing price of $146.03, a one-share distribution to each child would be worth approximately $10.5 billion to $10.7 billion. An August regulatory filing cited by CNBC and Al Jazeera shows Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares outright.
President Donald Trump said the shares would be distributed through Trump Accounts, tax-advantaged investment accounts established for children, though Musk has not publicly confirmed the mechanism. Treasury rules allow donors to contribute individual company shares through those accounts.
Musk made the pledge after Anthropic announced that it would commit at least 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund intended to support charitable donations or direct distributions. Responding to Anthropic on X, Musk recommended giving shares directly to the public and said that was what he intended to do.
