Cindy Crawford, her husband Rande Gerber and their daughter Kaia have paid tribute to Presley Gerber, who died at age 27 on Sept. 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica, California.
“We are beyond heartbroken to lose our beloved son and brother,” the family said in a statement posted Sunday on Instagram. They described Presley as “a sweet, beautiful soul” and said they were proud of the kindness and vulnerability he showed.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner lists the cause of death as pending further investigation. Santa Monica police have said they are investigating the death as a suspected overdose and have found no indication of foul play.
Kaia Gerber separately shared childhood photographs and video alongside a letter to her brother, whom she called her “ultimate teacher” and “great protector.” She wrote about adjusting to his absence: “I am learning how to love you when I cannot see you. How to tell you something without picking up my phone to call you.”
Presley Gerber, the eldest child of Crawford and Rande Gerber, began modeling as a teenager and worked for brands including Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta. In recent years, he had spoken publicly about depression, substance use and other mental-health challenges.
