French authorities said targeted curfews would remain available Tuesday after restrictions in several cities contributed to a largely calm night following a weekend of rioting, vandalism and looting.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu asked regional officials to impose “partial” and “localised” curfews to protect businesses after cost-of-living and anti-government demonstrations turned violent. He said the government was prepared to declare a state of emergency if necessary but ruled out a blanket curfew in Paris.
Police restricted movement from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday around Paris’s Place de la République and Les Halles, while demonstrations were banned in some other areas from 8 p.m. Nice imposed an overnight curfew for minors in its city centre, and similar restrictions for minors were introduced in Lille and nearby northern towns. Marseille separately banned public gatherings and demonstrations for part of Monday.
Lecornu said the measures had “contributed to the overnight calm” and would be reinstated where needed Tuesday night. The Interior Ministry said about 2,397 people were arrested Saturday, while another 108 arrests were reported in Paris after vandalism continued Sunday night.
Earlier Monday, protesters blocked the Louvre’s entrances in support of a national student movement and against what they called police repression. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez acknowledged that police had “lost control” in some cities and offered his resignation, which President Emmanuel Macron declined.
