Apple’s first foldable phone drew heavy demand after pre-orders opened Friday, quickly pushing estimated deliveries well beyond its October 23 launch date and into January in several markets.
The iPhone Duo went on sale through Apple’s website and Store app at 8 a.m. ET. CBS News reported that delivery estimates slipped within minutes and had reached late January by Friday afternoon. In the UAE, Apple’s online store showed a January 22 estimate across all four storage capacities and both color options, according to The National, which reported similar delays in the United States and United Kingdom.
“The preorder demand for iPhone Duo has been nothing short of extraordinary,” an Apple representative told The National, adding that the company was working to deliver devices “as quickly as possible.” Apple has not disclosed order totals. Seeking Alpha reported that Apple increased orders for the phone by 30%.
Prices start at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. The device has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner OLED display when unfolded. It supports split-screen use with separate apps or two windows from the same website.
Hong Kong police received more than 100 reports of unauthorized or duplicate credit-card transactions connected to Duo pre-orders, the South China Morning Post reported. A source told the newspaper that the disputed transactions totaled several million Hong Kong dollars and were still increasing.
