Trump Waives Russia-Related Sanctions and Tariffs for 60-Day Review

publishers 114articles 143first reported 17 Oct, 02:01 UTCdeveloping since 17 Oct · 10 editions

President Donald Trump has waived key sanctions and tariffs tied to Russian exports while his administration evaluates their potential effects on the U.S. and global economies, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

The measures were imposed under the Graham Act, which Trump signed last month, and had been scheduled to take effect next week. They include sanctions on Russia, tariffs on Russian goods and penalties targeting countries that purchase Russian oil and gas. Friday’s executive order did not specify the waiver’s duration, but Rubio said Trump would use up to 60 days to review the measures.

Trump said Saturday that he had not announced a final decision. “A lot of you don’t know what my decision is yet, but we’ll figure it out, and you’ll figure it out,” he told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

Rubio said the administration is examining how the restrictions could affect countries such as India, a U.S. partner that remains heavily dependent on Russian oil. Oil prices eased after the waiver, according to reports from The Times of India and TradingView.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized the move, warning that it would embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and prolong the war in Ukraine.
