A group of Arab and Islamic countries condemned Colombia’s inauguration of an embassy in Jerusalem and called on Bogotá to reverse the decision.
In a joint statement issued Friday, the foreign ministers said opening the embassy contravened United Nations Security Council resolutions and undermined efforts to achieve a lasting peace based on a two-state solution. Signatories included Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Qatar and Türkiye, among others.
The ministers said any measure intended to alter Jerusalem’s legal or historical status, or recognize the city as Israel’s capital, was “null and void” and had no legal effect. They cited Security Council resolutions 476 and 478, adopted in 1980, which reject attempts to change the city’s status and call on countries to withdraw diplomatic missions from Jerusalem.
The statement urged Colombia to uphold its obligations under international law and avoid measures that prejudice Palestinian rights, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Algeria separately described the embassy opening as an illegal step that could fuel conflict and hinder peace efforts.
Colombia inaugurated the embassy on October 14, becoming the 10th country to establish a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, according to reports cited by The Express Tribune and Antara. Most countries maintain embassies to Israel in Tel Aviv because Jerusalem’s status remains disputed between Israelis and Palestinians.
