Nineteen people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pavilion in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, according to later reports from The Hindu and Scroll.in. Initial official figures had put the death toll at 17.
The crush occurred at about 7:40 p.m. after rainfall prompted people waiting outside to rush toward the pavilion for shelter. Police said the crowd began pushing forward, while The Indian Express reported that an announcement warning the structure might collapse if the crowd was not controlled added to the confusion.
The injured were taken to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital and other facilities. The pavilion was closed to visitors and handed over to investigators and forensic teams.
Police initially detained 12 organizers, security personnel and volunteers for questioning. By Tuesday, seven people had been arrested and booked under several provisions, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, The Hindu reported. The West Bengal government said a sitting Calcutta High Court judge would lead an investigation.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited several victims’ families on Tuesday and distributed ₹25 lakh compensation cheques, while promising a government job to one member of each bereaved family. The state also announced ₹5 lakh for each injured person and payment of their treatment costs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh for each bereaved family and ₹50,000 for each injured person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
