Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on Saturday after doctors discharged him from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, four days after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and part of his right lung.
The 71-year-old pope walked through the hospital lobby before leaving, smiling, shaking hands and waving to well-wishers. He also spoke briefly with his doctors, hospital officials and a 13-year-old Ukrainian cancer survivor who had come to wish him well. His vehicle later entered the Vatican through a side entrance.
Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora said Leo was fit for discharge after reviewing blood tests, a chest X-ray and his overall clinical condition. The Vatican has said his recovery is progressing normally, while doctors await test results that will help determine further treatment.
Before leaving the hospital, Leo celebrated Mass in the room where he had been recovering. The Vatican said he planned to deliver the Angelus prayer Sunday from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter’s Square.
Leo has resumed some work but has canceled his audiences through October 20. A planned November 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru remains uncertain as he continues his recovery.
