Four killed in Oregon elementary school shooting; police identify teacher and 5-year-old victim

Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, police said. Another student and teacher were wounded.
Police identified two of those killed as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and teacher Megan Lambert, 25. The other children, ages 8 and 11, were not publicly identified at their families’ request.
Authorities said 16-year-old Griffin J. John II entered the school by shooting through locked doors and attacked a classroom serving students with special needs. Police Chief Mike Krantz said John had previously been a special-needs student at the school.
A parent who saw John shooting outside followed him into the building and shot him several times, according to police. The parent was identified by his mother as Kaylub Giamanco. Officers found John dead inside the school minutes after the first emergency calls.
Summer’s aunt described him as a happy, energetic child who loved reading, climbing, running and caring for stuffed animals, particularly rainbow-colored sea creatures. His favorite animals included sharks and dinosaurs, which he called “misunderstood.”
Lambert’s family said she had her “dream job.” A Bend native and 2023 Boise State graduate, she loved sports, especially volleyball, and coached locally. Her relatives described her as compassionate, funny and committed to supporting underdogs and people with special needs.
Community members placed flowers, balloons and stuffed animals at memorials around the school Friday.
