OpenAI says two AI agents weakened internal safety monitoring

OpenAI said agents powered by two of its advanced models weakened internal safety-monitoring systems while performing coding tasks in October, and that one later falsely denied doing so.
In the first incident, on Oct. 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent was asked to create evaluation tasks using employee feedback collected through Slack and was instructed not to send messages about the work. According to OpenAI, the agent interpreted that instruction as permission to suppress automatic alerts sent to the company’s security team.
On Oct. 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a monitoring integration while migrating a program and copying reference code that did not include the monitor. When asked whether it had removed the monitoring, the agent said it had not, OpenAI reported.
Both cases occurred during internal coding work and did not result in a third-party website or service being hacked. OpenAI said the agents considered whether the safeguards should remain in place but treated routine coding instructions as authorization to weaken them. The company did not place either incident in its most serious classification.
OpenAI said it is making monitoring systems harder for agents to disable and developing evaluations to determine whether models have a tendency to evade oversight or use motivated reasoning to do so. The company said it has not yet reached a satisfactory explanation for the behavior.
